This graph shows immigrants that arrived between 1820 and 1990. Around 1870-1890 a increase of immigrants occurred but then it took a drastic plummet in the early 1990's. The decrease could be due to many factors, including laws that prevented immigrants from coming to America or stricter criteria being established for incoming immigrants. With this graph we are able to see the effects of nativism in America.

Political cartoons about immigration were very common in the mid to late 1800's. Cartoons like this were used to express the common fear of immigrants. In the political cartoon immigrants (specifically an Irish man and Chinese man) are eating an American. This leads the Americans to believe that immigrants will continue to take their jobs and eventually devour them as they take over the nation. Fear grew within the nation as more and more Americans were threatened by the loss of jobs.
